The “Madara” national reserve has a uniquely engraved figure in the cliff side. The carving’s dimensions will surprise, towering at 23 meters in height it is a formidable sight. The original carving was made depicting the “Madara Horseman” and is the only surviving legacy left from the early European Middle Ages.
Historians cannot agree on who is the horseman depicted on the bas-relief. Whether it’s the Bulgarian Khan Tervel or the Thracian god is not yet decided. Next to the carving sits an interesting engravement which is credited to the local rulers of the land. The Madara Horseman is under UNESCO protection and is visited by thousands of tourists coming from all over the world.
