What you’ll see on your walking tour of Sofia
Sofia is one of the oldest European capitals. There is a huge number of things to see here. We’ll fit in some of the most impressive art galleries and museums, of course…
But there are also all kinds of ancient monuments and places of historical significance:
When you’re walking the streets of Sofa, the frescos of the Boyana Church are hard to ignore.
Located in the foothills of the beautiful Vitosha Mountain, you can go trekking here or ride on ski lifts to see the view from higher up.
Saint Sophia Church
There are many “Saint Sophia” or “Hagia Sophia” churches in the world, but Sofia’s is one of the most historically important.
First built in the 4th century, this church was responsible for giving the city its name back in the 14th century. This was before being converted into mosque, destroyed by an earthquake and then renovated!
In short, it’s had quite the history. You’ll learn all about id during your tour.
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
This magnificent structure is in the centre of Sofia located near to some of the oldest churches – Saint Sophia, of course and the rotunda of Saint George – as well as the parliament building, archaeological museum and National Art Gallery.
The exterior is impressive. The interior is truly jaw-dropping.
Numerous other sites
The city of Sofia really is bursting at the seams with things to see. A small selection would include:
- The Monument to the Unknown Soldier
- The National Gallery of Foreign Art
- Ivan Vazov Park
- Hidden sights which are a little off the beaten path!
You can extend your tour, set up a multi-day excursion incorporating some of the local region’s unique monuments and cultural icons or otherwise customise your private tour of Sofia however you want to.
